The Traditional Master of Science curriculum has three pillars: the core curriculum, the specialty core courses, and clinical experience. The core curriculum is designed to ensure that you attain mastery of a base of knowledge that is critical to all graduate-prepared nurses. The specialty core courses allow you to achieve mastery in at least one specialty, preparing you for certification in that specialty. The clinical experience gives you the opportunity to practice at an advanced level.

Nursing 602 Theoretical Foundations for Advanced Practice Roles in Nursing
Nursing 603 Nursing within the American Health Care System

In addition, each specialty has its own required coursework.
Online study
Most of the nursing core curriculum is offered as an online study option during various quarters. Students enrolled in online courses are required to attend some “live” classes each quarter on the Columbus campus at the instructor’s discretion.
Clinical experience
Clinical experience provides the precepted hours necessary for certification. Preceptors are available in a wide variety of geographic locations and clinical sites throughout central Ohio. Students are required to complete at least three quarters of clinical coursework.
*Ohio State University is switching from quarters
to semesters beginning Autumn 2012. The Ohio State University and the College
of Nursing are committed to making this process as seamless as possible.
Students will not be penalized if some of their courses are on the quarter
system and some are on the semester system. The requirements for licensure and
certification will be preserved. Faculty are currently working on these
revisions. Students will be notified in a timely manner when the revisions are
finalized.
